Herkimer Diamond

4 min read

The Herkimer Diamond is not a Diamond, but a clear Quartz crystal naturally terminated at both ends. Its opposing points evoke a current that receives and transmits. Contemporary magic uses it to amplify an intention, connect two places, support dreaming, and circulate a message without retaining it.

Its symbolic power does not come from hardness comparable to that of Diamond. It arises from its clarity, natural faces, and dual axis. It acts as a Quartz messenger: open in both directions, yet centered within a single crystal.

A double-terminated Quartz

The Herkimer Diamond is a Quartz crystal composed of silica. It is distinguished by its transparency, well-formed faces, and two pointed ends. A complete crystal can have eighteen faces without having been cut.

The New York State Museum notes that the word “Diamond” refers only to its luster and clarity. Its hardness is that of Quartz, 7 on the Mohs scale, far below the 10 of a true Diamond.

The rock cavities of New York State

Genuine specimens come from Herkimer County and the Mohawk Valley in New York State. They develop in cavities in Little Falls dolostone, a rock deposited during the Cambrian.

The GIA describes their classic double-terminated form. Similar Quartz crystals exist elsewhere, but the name Herkimer primarily refers to this geographical origin. The name therefore does not designate a separate mineral family.

From the visionary Quartz to the modern messenger

Ancient uses concern Rock Crystal in general: vision, divination, sleep, and protection. Isidore Kozminsky brings together several of these themes in The Magic and Science of Jewels and Stones, published in 1922.

In 1988, Scott Cunningham associated Quartz with the Sun, the Moon, Fire, and Water, as well as protection, vision, meditation, and ritual power. Practices specific to Herkimer Diamonds later developed around their double termination: emission, reception, connection, and amplification.

Two points, one axis. The crystal receives on one side and transmits on the other without dividing itself. It reminds us that a true connection allows words to flow in both directions while still maintaining a direction.

Sun, Moon, Fire, and Water

The Sun corresponds to clarity, projection, and action. The Moon governs reception, dreams, and memory. Fire carries the intention outward; Water receives the image and message. The double crystal brings these poles together without confusing them.

Sunday is suitable for amplifying a project; Monday for dreams and divination; Wednesday for a message or a connection between two places. White, silver, two candles, and a clear thread accompany its rituals.

Amplification, connection, and dreams

To amplify a request, write it in one sentence and place one point toward the text and the other outward. First make sure the intention is precise: Quartz also increases confusion if nothing has been chosen.

To maintain a long-distance connection, each person keeps a similar object or half of a ribbon. The Herkimer Diamond remains at the center of the altar as a symbol of circulation, without being used to control the other person.

For dreaming, place it near the notebook, away from the bed. Formulate a question before sleep, then write down upon waking the first place, the first face, and the first movement that come to mind.

The bridge with two points

Place two white candles a short distance apart and stretch a clear thread between them. Place the Herkimer Diamond in the middle, aligned with the thread. Name what must pass from one point to the other: a word, aid, decision, or reconciliation.

Light the first candle, then the second. Say: “I receive without holding back, I transmit without distorting.” Slide two fingers along the thread, then send the message or perform the intended act.
