Carnelian
Carnelian has been known since Greco-Roman antiquity and in the Islamic world. Pliny the Elder described it under the names sarda or cornelius, and it appears very early in the engraving of seals and signet rings, as it allows a clear imprint without sticking to the wax. This practical property explains its use in practices related to authority, given word, and validation of acts. In Islamic tradition, it holds an important place: Carnelian (ʿaqīq) is worn as a ring, sometimes engraved with verses or divine names, to support dignity, protection, and integrity in affairs. In medieval European lapidaries, it is associated with courage, firmness, and emotional control, especially in situations of conflict or decision. Its reddish-orange color naturally connects it to blood, vitality, and action, which explains its frequent link to Mars in traditional correspondence systems, as well as to the Fire element. It is used in practices aimed at strengthening determination, supporting speech, and maintaining a clear stance in front of others. Carnelian is not used to soothe or attract; it works in the realm of assertion, steadiness, and commitment. It is worn to support willpower or placed in a workspace where speech and authority must remain firm.
