We have the answers.
What is a mother tincture of incense?
A mother tincture of incense is a concentrated hydroalcoholic extract, obtained by prolonged maceration of frankincense or myrrh in alcohol. This process dissolves the aromatic and resinous compounds, creating a liquid highly charged with the "essence" of the resin.
How to use them in fumigation?
Do not pour the tincture directly onto embers: the alcohol would ignite violently. You need to soak a medium (wood chips, dried herbs, cold charcoal), let the alcohol partially evaporate, then burn this medium to release the aromas and the ritual charge.
Can candles be anointed with it?
Not directly: alcohol is highly flammable and can cause an uncontrolled flame. For use on candles, you must either let the alcohol evaporate completely or extract the resin from the tincture and dilute it in a non-flammable carrier oil.
Can you sprinkle a talisman or an object?
Yes, in a light spray, especially to purify or consecrate. You should test on a small area first, as alcohol can damage certain materials (pigments, varnishes, delicate metals). Let it air dry before use.
Can they be incorporated into magical inks?
Yes, this is historically consistent with certain ancient recipes (PGM) that mention myrrh and incense in the composition of sacred inks. The dye can be added to water or to gum arabic used as a binder, allowing the alcohol to partially evaporate.
How long do they last?
In a tinted glass bottle, tightly closed and stored away from light and heat, they can be preserved for several years. Alcohol acts as a natural preservative.
