Papus

Papus

Papus, whose real name was Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse, was born in 1865 in La Coruña, Spain, and died in 1916 in Paris, where he became one of the major figures of the French occult revival at the end of the 19th century. Trained in medicine, he simultaneously developed a deep interest in esoteric traditions, which he approached with a desire for synthesis and structure. He joined Parisian occult circles alongside Stanislas de Guaita and Joséphin Péladan, participating in the formation of a movement that sought to restore coherence to Hermetic knowledge, Kabbalah, and ceremonial magic. Papus published numerous works, including Methodical Treatise of Occult Science and The Tarot of the Bohemians, which offer an organized presentation of symbolic correspondences, planes of existence, and divinatory practices. He founded the Martinist Order, inspired by the teachings of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, with the goal of transmitting a structured initiatory path based on inner progression and knowledge of invisible laws. His activity also extended to directing journals and teaching, with a constant desire to spread knowledge. Engaged as a doctor during World War I, he died from an infection contracted at the front. His abundant and structured work remains a major entry point for understanding French occultism of this period.

Why choose a book by author?

Esotericism is not limited to an accumulation of practices and beliefs. It is a journey, a quest for knowledge rooted in study and transmission. Great esoteric authors have dedicated their lives to uncovering the mysteries of the invisible world and sharing their discoveries through powerful and inspiring writings. Diving into the complete works of an author allows one to grasp the evolution of their thought and the depth of their approach.

Some have devoted their research to the secrets of magic and symbols, like Eliphas Lévi or Papus. Others have explored Hermetic initiation, such as Franz Bardon. Aleister Crowley revolutionized ritual magic and Kabbalah with a bold approach, while Doreen Valiente and Scott Cunningham restored the prestige of natural magic and pagan traditions.
