To fully understand the teachings related to esotericism and occultism, it is essential to first establish a solid foundation. Among these foundations, astrology holds a central place. But this is not about the commercial astrology found in magazine horoscopes. Papus refers to an ancient, rigorous astrology, also called astrosophy. It is a way of reading the sky as a symbolic language, which helps to better understand the invisible laws that connect humans to the universe.
This knowledge is indispensable for deciphering certain esoteric texts, but also to avoid missing what today’s astrologers are saying. Many of them assume the reader already knows what a house, an aspect, or a transit is… which is not always the case. The result: one can quickly become lost or misinterpret a chart.
Papus therefore wrote this small book to meet this need. He designed it as a basic tool, both clear and practical, for anyone who wants to seriously begin studying astrology from an esoteric perspective. No need to be a specialist to read it: everything is explained simply, step by step. The book lays the foundations but also opens doors to more subtle concepts for those who want to go further. Papus, the pseudonym of Gérard Encausse (1865-1916), is a major figure in 19th-century French occultism. Trained as a physician, he was also a writer, lecturer, and esotericist. Passionate about spirituality, he became one of the main promoters of Hermeticism, Theosophy, and Kabbalah in France.
A prolific author, Papus wrote numerous works, including "Methodical Treatise on Practical Magic" and "The Science of the Magi", which remain key references in esotericism. He is also the founder of the Martinist Order, an initiatory organization dedicated to transmitting the mystical teachings of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin.
Playing a key role in the revival of occult traditions in Europe, he left his mark on his era through his scholarship and commitment to making spirituality accessible to all.
