The Mindat entry places it in alkaline rocks and pegmatite cavities, alongside titanium-bearing minerals. Its rarity and the small size of its crystals make it primarily a collector’s and study specimen.
The revised formula
The initial formula attributed iron, aluminum, and magnesium to Cafetite. A structural study published in the American Mineralogist showed that the iron came from impurities present in the initial samples.
The recognized structure consists of layers of titanium octahedra, linked by calcium and water. The correction does not change the specimen; it changes how it is described.
Afrikanda and the retained name
Cafetite was described in 1959 from material from the Afrikanda massif, on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Its name combined the first syllables of calcium, ferrum, and titanium.
Iron is no longer part of the ideal formula, but the name has not been replaced. The Webmineral directory refers to the study that established this revision.
Correcting a formula does not condemn the previous work. Revision preserves the record of the hypothesis, separates impurity from structure, and makes the description more accurate.
