Our Lady of the Snows is an honorary title given to the Virgin Mary, commemorating the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, one of the first churches dedicated to Mary. According to tradition, in 358, the Virgin appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius, instructing him to build a church where he would find snow in the middle of summer. On August 5th, a miraculous snowfall covered the Esquiline Hill, marking the site of the future basilica.
Notre-Dame des Neiges Abbey
In France, the Notre-Dame des Neiges Abbey, founded in 1850 by Trappist monks from the Aiguebelle Abbey, is located at 1,100 meters altitude in the commune of Saint-Laurent-les-Bains-Laval-d'Aurelle, in Ardèche. This monastery is known for having hosted the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson during his journey through the Cévennes in 1878. In December 2022, a community of Cistercian nuns from Boulaur Abbey took over from the Trappist brothers, continuing the tradition of prayer and hospitality at this place.
Notre-Dame des Neiges Church of Alpe d'Huez
The Notre-Dame des Neiges Church, located in Alpe d'Huez, is a modern building constructed between 1968 and 1970. Designed by architect Jean Marol, it is distinguished by its shape resembling a tent, symbolizing Abraham's tent. The interior is decorated with stained glass windows created by the artist Arcabas, illustrating the life of Christ according to the Gospel of Mark. The church also houses a hand-shaped organ, designed by composer Jean Guillou.
