Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a 14th-century Byzantine icon depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus, surrounded by the archangels Gabriel and Michael presenting the instruments of the Passion. This image is especially venerated for its spiritual significance and rich history.

Origins and history of the icon

Of Cretan origin, the icon was brought to Rome at the end of the 15th century. It was placed in the Church of Saint Matthew, where it remained until the church's destruction in 1798. After a period of neglect, it was entrusted to the Redemptorists in 1866, who installed it in the Church of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, near the site of the former Church of Saint Matthew. Since then, devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has spread worldwide.

The icon and its symbolism

The Child Jesus, looking at the instruments of the Passion, expresses both his fear and his sacrificial mission. Mary's gaze, directed toward the faithful, symbolizes her role as mediator and comforter, inviting trust in her intercession.

Spiritual significance and devotion

The icon is considered miraculous and is invoked to obtain the help and protection of the Virgin Mary in times of need. Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is especially widespread in Christian communities, where it is celebrated on June 27. Many churches and basilicas are dedicated to her, notably the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Paris.
