Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady of Lourdes is the title given to the Virgin Mary in reference to the apparitions that occurred in 1858 in Lourdes, France. These events deeply marked Catholic spirituality and made Lourdes a major pilgrimage site.

The 1858 Apparitions

Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old girl, claimed to have witnessed eighteen apparitions of a "lady" in the Massabielle grotto near Lourdes. During the sixteenth apparition, on March 25, the lady introduced herself by saying: "I am the Immaculate Conception," a phrase Bernadette did not fully understand but which corresponded to the dogma proclaimed by the Catholic Church in 1854.

Recognition and Development of the Sanctuary

After thorough investigations, the Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1862. A sanctuary was then built on the site of the Massabielle grotto, including several basilicas and places of prayer. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes quickly became an international pilgrimage center, attracting millions of faithful each year.

The Water of Lourdes and Healings

During the apparitions, the Virgin reportedly asked Bernadette to drink and wash at a spring inside the grotto. This spring, discovered by Bernadette by digging the ground, has since been associated with many healings that some consider miraculous. Every year, thousands of pilgrims come to bathe in the pools fed by this water of Lourdes, hoping for spiritual and physical benefits.

Celebrations and Global Influence

The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated on February 11, the date of the first apparition. This day is also dedicated to the World Day of the Sick, established by Pope John Paul II in 1992, highlighting the connection between Lourdes and compassion for suffering people. The Lourdes sanctuary has become a symbol of hope and faith for Catholics worldwide, inspiring the construction of replicas and places of devotion dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in many countries.
