The Strzyga

The Strzyga

General Description of Strzyga

The Strzyga is a feared mythological creature in Slavic folklore, especially in Poland. It is a figure similar to the vampire or the revenant, but with its own distinct characteristics. The Strzyga is generally described as a person who, after an unnatural or premature death, returns in the form of a vengeful spirit or an animated corpse to haunt the living and feed on their blood or life energy. This term also refers to a person born with two souls, two hearts, or two sets of teeth, foretelling a cursed fate where one of the souls or hearts allows the Strzyga to survive its own death.

The Strzyga, after dying once, returns in the form of a monster. During the day, it appears as an ordinary person, but at night, it transforms into an evil creature, attacking people to feed on their blood.

Symbols and Appearances

The Strzyga is often described as a deformed creature, with both human and monstrous features. It is sometimes depicted with extra teeth or claws, glowing eyes, or a corpse-like appearance. It feeds on the vital energies of its victims, draining their life over time. Strzygas usually hide during the day and transform at night to terrorize the living.

Strzyga Genealogy

The Strzyga has no specific divine genealogy but is considered a form of revenant or undead arising from a person born with an abnormal condition, who did not receive proper funeral rites or who died violently. It symbolizes ancient fears related to death and the importance of funeral rites in Slavic beliefs. To prevent someone from becoming a Strzyga, it was customary to decapitate the body or burn it.
