The Skrzak

Panthéon Slave

General Description of the Skrzak

The Skrzak is a small mischievous spirit in Polish and Wende folklore. It is often described as a flying demon or a small imp, capable of moving quickly thanks to its wings. According to legend, the Skrzak is connected to the hearths of homes, where it watches over domestic order, but it can also have a darker side. In some traditions, it is seen as a protector of the home, performing household chores and warding off evil spirits. However, after the death of the head of the household, it is said that the Skrzak claims the soul of the deceased, making it an ambivalent creature, both protective and unsettling.

Symbols and Appearances

The Skrzak is often depicted as a small winged creature, with a body able to slip into the dark corners of the house, especially under the hearth or near the fireplace. Its wings allow it to move quietly, making it an excellent spy or messenger for witches in some more recent interpretations of the myth. Its presence in the home is felt through noises or the movement of objects, and it is often associated with the protection of the place against malevolent spirits.

Genealogy of the Skrzak

The Skrzak has no specific divine genealogy, but it is often seen as an independent domestic spirit, similar to other mythological creatures like the Domovoi or the Krasnoludek in Slavic tradition. Its origins are linked to Polish and Slavic beliefs about household spirits and their role in protecting or disturbing domestic balance.
