How is a birth chart composed?
A birth chart is not read one symbol at a time. Its interpretation combines four layers in a simple order: a planet shows what is acting, the zodiac sign how that function is expressed, the house where it operates, and the aspects how the planets relate to one another. Select each category to follow this method step by step.
The planet answers ‘what is acting?’. Think of it as the verb of the chart: the Sun concerns identity and direction, the Moon emotional needs, Mercury thought and communication, Venus attachment and values, Mars action, Jupiter expansion, and Saturn limits and structure. First identify this function, then use its sign and house to understand how and where it is expressed.
The zodiac sign answers ‘how?’. It gives a planet its style of expression, pace and way of reacting, without changing the planet’s basic function. Mars still represents action: in Aries it is traditionally read as more direct and spontaneous, while in Cancer it may act in a more protective and indirect way. The sign therefore qualifies the planet; it does not describe the whole personality on its own.
The house answers ‘in which area of life?’. The twelve sectors form the setting in which a planet’s function is interpreted: identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, daily life, relationships, transformation, horizons, vocation, community or inner life. Venus in the seventh house, for example, directs questions of bonds and values towards partnerships. A house is a field of experience, not an isolated event prediction.
Aspects answer ‘how do the planets relate?’. They are angular distances between two planets: a conjunction brings their functions together, a square or opposition highlights a contrast to work with, while a trine or sextile traditionally indicates an easier exchange. For example, a Mars–Saturn aspect links drive with limits and structure. No aspect is read alone: its meaning depends on the planets, signs, houses and the chart as a whole.
