The Eleventh House shows what comes to support a life after the visible effort of the Tenth House: tried-and-tested friends, allies, protectors, useful advice, and hopes that can find support in reality. It does not indiscriminately describe all social life. Rather, it examines the quality of chosen relationships, the loyalty of supporters, and the part of the future that a person can build with others.
Ancient astrologers called it the “Good Spirit.” Paulus Alexandrinus regarded it as Jupiter’s proper place, where he rejoices, and attributed alliance, patronage, and favorable expectations to it. William Lilly examines friends, trust, hope, praise, advisers, and the loyalty of supporters there. A strong Eleventh House therefore does not guarantee unqualified popularity: it first indicates how help circulates, where it comes from, and under what conditions it bears fruit.
From the Good Spirit to Fruitful Alliances
The Eleventh House follows the Tenth House in the movement of the houses. It is said to be succedent: it gathers, stabilizes, or extends what was accomplished at the culminating place. This is why tradition has seen in it the supports that accompany public action, favors granted, and people who recommend, advise, or protect, as well as the benefits one can derive from one’s position.
Its Greek name, Agathos Daimôn, often translated as “Good Spirit” or “Good Divinity,” does not evoke an invisible guide in the modern sense. It describes a place considered favorable, configured by sextile to the Ascendant and associated with Jupiter. This geometry explains much of its reputation: the house can aid the native and help fulfill their expectations, provided that its ruler and the planets present are in a condition to produce what they promise.
Traditional point. Jupiter truly rejoices in the Eleventh House. By contrast, the automatic association “Eleventh House = Aquarius = Uranus” belongs to modern systems and should not replace an examination of the actual sign on the house and its ruler. Lilly gives Aquarius and the Sun as general co-significators of the eleventh; he does not say that every Eleventh House is ruled by Aquarius.
The Eleventh House is opposite the Fifth House. Their axis sets what proceeds from oneself—creation, pleasure, children, personal works—against what receives the help of others: friendships, alliances, recommendations, and shared hopes. The opposition does not necessarily create conflict; it asks us to understand how personal desires encounter the support, interests, or limits of the chosen circle.
What the Eleventh House Governs
Friendship, Loyalty, and Alliances
The Eleventh House speaks of friends in the fullest sense: those whose presence has consequences, who open a door, defend a cause, pass on information, or remain loyal through hardship. It reveals the nature of friendships, their solidity, and their mutual usefulness. A well-placed ruler can indicate reliable alliances; a weakened or heavily afflicted ruler can show disappointed promises, conflicting interests, or a circle that costs more than it supports.
It also provides information about how one enters into relationships. Some charts favor few but lasting friendships; others multiply contacts, mediation, or social circles. Judgment never comes from the house’s sign alone: one must observe its ruler, its dignities, its position, the planets it receives, and the aspects that reach it.
Protectors, Advisers, and Supporters
For Lilly, the Eleventh concerns the favorites, advisers, servants, associates, and allies of the powerful. Applied with due measure, this meaning describes people capable of providing support: a mentor, recommendation, patron, influential colleague, intermediary, or adviser. It can also show those whom we protect ourselves, since every house describes an exchange rather than a fixed role.
In questions concerning an enterprise or position, the Eleventh House complements the Tenth: it indicates the support that makes action possible, the channels through which it benefits, and the confidence it inspires. To distinguish sincere help from mere self-interest, we assess the condition of the ruler of the Eleventh and its connections with the relevant significators.
Hopes and the Fruits of Action
Tradition attributes hope, wishes, and “good expectations” to the Eleventh House. This is not a catalogue of abstract dreams. The house shows what a person can reasonably expect through their alliances, reputation, and the circumstances that extend their actions. Its succedent nature connects hope with time, continuity, and the fruits of an engagement already begun.
A favorable Eleventh House can bring confidence, opportunities, and support at the right time. When it is difficult, hope may be delayed, misdirected, or dependent on unreliable people. This does not condemn projects; rather, the chart clarifies the method needed to choose one’s allies, verify promises, and give lasting form to what is desired.
How to Interpret the Eleventh House
A rigorous reading proceeds in order. We begin with the sign occupying the Eleventh House, then identify its traditional ruler. This ruler is the principal witness of friendships and hopes: its house indicates where these matters play out; its sign, dignity, speed, visibility, and aspects show how easily they come to fruition.
| Element to examine | Interpretive question |
|---|---|
| The sign of the Eleventh House | What style, rhythm, and general quality do alliances and expectations take on? |
| The traditional ruler | In which house does it act? Is it dignified, received, direct, retrograde, visible, or under the Sun's rays? |
| Planets in the Eleventh House | Which actors and circumstances directly occupy the sphere of friends, supporters, and hopes? |
| Aspects to the ruler | Who facilitates, delays, obstructs, or transforms the fulfillment of the house's promises? |
| The sect of the chart | Does a planet act under conditions more in keeping with its diurnal or nocturnal nature? |
| The connection with the Tenth House | Do alliances extend the action, burden, or reputation described by the Tenth House? |
| The V–XI axis | How do works, pleasures, or children encounter the help and expectations coming from others? |
A benefic planet in the Eleventh House may offer support and protection, but this does not eliminate the need to examine its condition. A so-called malefic planet does not prohibit friendship: it may describe demanding, self-interested, delayed, competitive, or circumstantially tested bonds. Mars placed according to its sect does not act like Mars out of sect; a dignified Saturn does not produce the same effects as a weakened Saturn. The entire chart decides.

The Eleventh House in the twelve signs
The sign gives the house its language; its ruler reveals the concrete means. The following indications are interpretive guidelines. They must always be confirmed by the ruler's position and condition.
| Sign in the Eleventh House | Traditional ruler | Friendships, support, and hopes |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Frank, swift, and active alliances. Friends may stimulate courage and initiative; haste, rivalry, or quarrels must be kept under control. |
| Taurus | Venus | A search for loyalty, stability, and tangible benefits. Bonds grow stronger through duration, shared pleasures, and reliability, with a risk of self-interested attachment or inertia. |
| Gemini | Mercury | A mobile network, numerous exchanges, friendships nourished by ideas, writing, commerce, or study. Promises may become scattered if Mercury lacks stability. |
| Cancer | Moon | Protective, familiar, or changeable bonds. A sense of belonging matters greatly; one's circle and expectations evolve according to life's phases and the condition of the Moon. |
| Lion | Sun | Visible, proud, or well-connected friends; a desire for loyalty and mutual recognition. Support grows with the nobility of the connection, but suffers from pride or the pursuit of admiration. |
| Virgo | Mercury | Alliances based on competence, service, advice, or precise work. Expectations benefit from being methodical; excessive criticism can cool relationships. |
| Libra | Venus | A search for agreement, fairness, and mediation. Friends may open doors to artistic, legal, or diplomatic circles; indecision and superficial compromises weaken support. |
| Scorpio | Mars | Intense, strategic, and selective connections. Alliances endure when based on proven loyalty; jealousy, secrecy, or power struggles can make them difficult. |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | Broad hopes, generous support, connections with knowledge, law, foreign countries, or moral authorities. Trust helps greatly, but excessive promises must be restrained. |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Few alliances, often serious, hierarchical, or lasting. Support is earned over time; prudence offers protection, while mistrust or ambition can lead to isolation. |
| Aquarius | Saturn | Friendships structured around a cause, institution, discipline, or shared interest. Constancy strengthens the group; rigidity and distance can make connections impersonal. |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Compassionate, hospitable, or faith- and imagination-inspired alliances. Generosity opens doors; vague expectations or undiscerning trust expose one to disappointment. |
The seven planets in the Eleventh House
The planets present become direct actors in the house. Their celestial condition, sect, and aspects profoundly modify the outcome: favorable or difficult meanings must never be isolated from the rest of the chart.
| Planet in the Eleventh House | Possible expression | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Prominent friends, visible protectors, honorable alliances; the possibility of gaining esteem or resources through well-connected people. | Pride, domination in friendship, dependence on favor, or an excessive need to be recognized by one’s circle. |
| Moon | A large or shifting circle, feminine or maternal support, a keen sense of hospitality and the group’s needs; connections that follow life changes. | Unstable alliances, expectations subject to mood, excessive influence of collective opinion. |
| Mercury | Learned friends, merchants, messengers, or advisers; support gained through study, writing, speech, negotiation, and the circulation of information. | Intrigue, double talk, changing promises, dispersion among too many contacts. |
| Venus | Pleasant friendships, benevolent mediators, favor in the arts, pleasures, or diplomatic circles; ability to reconcile competing interests. | Complacency, favoritism, confusion between affection and advantage, expenses dictated by one’s circle. |
| Mars | Active, military, athletic, or enterprising allies; collective energy, vigorous defense of a project, and decisive help in an emergency. | Quarrels, ruptures, rivalries, combative or reckless friends. Mars’s sect and dignity are decisive. |
| Jupiter | Jupiter’s planetary joy: generous protectors, loyal friends, honors, confidence, opportunities, and the gradual increase of resources or influence. | Excessive optimism, overly broad promises, dependence on benefactors, or the feeling that all support is guaranteed. |
| Saturn | Older, sober, or experienced friends; institutional alliances, proven loyalty, and late benefits capable of lasting. | Isolation, delayed hopes, cold or self-interested relationships, and the weight of obligations. Its sect strongly changes the judgment. |
The Ruler of House XI in the Other Houses
The house occupied by the ruler of XI indicates where friendships, support, and hopes seek to act. This derivative rule is often more precise than the sign alone: it connects the domain of the eleventh house to a concrete area of life.
| Ruler of XI in… | Main interpretation |
|---|---|
| House I | Friends and protectors directly influence conduct, appearance, or decisions. The native may themselves become a source of support for their circle. |
| House II | Alliances concern income, possessions, and material security. Financial support is possible, but shared interests must remain clearly defined. |
| House III | Support comes from siblings, neighbors, messengers, study, or short journeys. Projects advance through exchange and mediation. |
| House IV | Friends become involved in family, domestic, or property matters. Hopes seek a foundation, a place, a legacy, or an outcome at the end of a matter. |
| House V | Alliances favor works, pleasures, children, or creations. Friendship and affection may overlap; personal desire becomes a driving force behind shared projects. |
| House VI | Support intervenes in subordinate work, service, illness, or daily constraints. It can help resolve a concrete difficulty. |
| House VII | Friends become partners, contractual allies, or sometimes declared adversaries. Hopes pass through agreement, marriage, partnership, or negotiation. |
| House VIII | Support is linked to other people’s resources, debts, inheritances, losses, or worries. Material promises require transparency and caution. |
| House IX | Alliances come through travel, knowledge, religion, law, or foreign countries. Hopes grow through education and broadening one’s judgment. |
| House X | Friends and protectors support status, reputation, and public action. The circle may directly contribute to advancement—or weigh on honor. |
| Eleventh House | The ruler returns to its own house: friends, support, and hopes become central. Their quality then depends very visibly on the ruler’s dignity and aspects. |
| Twelfth House | Alliances operate in secrecy, distance, hardship, or secluded places. Discreet help is possible, but so are false friends, hidden promises, or isolation from one’s circle. |
The ruler’s presence in a difficult house is not enough to indicate betrayal. A dignified ruler, well received, or aided by favorable planets can provide genuine help at the heart of a trying situation. Conversely, a ruler in a strong house but seriously weakened can bring visible relationships whose reliability remains uncertain.

Tips for Reading the Eleventh House
Start with the ruler. The sign on the cusp, or the eleventh sign from the Ascendant, designates a traditional ruler. Its position often answers the essential question: where and how do sources of support become effective?
Distinguish relationships from friendships. Not every acquaintance automatically belongs to the Eleventh House. The Seventh describes face-to-face relationships and contracts; the Third, close relations, siblings, and the neighborhood; the Eleventh, chosen friends, allies, and those who foster hope.
Connect XI to X. The Eleventh House follows the Tenth. Ask which forms of support extend public action, facilitate a position, or allow a work to bear fruit. An alliance can support one’s reputation, but it can also involve or compromise it.
Judge the promises, not just the desires. A hope indicated by XI should be compared with its ruler, the Moon, and the houses concerned. A good intention does not necessarily become a result; a modest expectation may, on the other hand, be fulfilled through a strong and well-received ruler.
Keep the traditional rulers. For Aquarius, examine Saturn; for Pisces, Jupiter; for Scorpio, Mars. Modern planets can enrich a contemporary reading, but they do not replace the chain of rulership on which traditional judgments rest.
Keep in mind
A house of support, not an automatic promise
The Eleventh House is considered favorable, but no single placement guarantees perfect friends, constant protection, or the fulfillment of every wish. A serious interpretation takes the entire chart, the condition of the ruler, sect, and activated periods into account. Astrology describes qualities of time and symbolic configurations; it should not replace discernment, dialogue, or professional advice when the situation calls for it.
