The Samhain 2025 celebration, held on October 31st, is one of the most important Sabbats in the pagan calendar and marks the end of the harvest as well as the beginning of winter. It is considered the Witches' New Year and represents a time when the veil between the world of the living and that of the spirits is thinnest, making communication with ancestors and spirits easier. This Celtic festival invites introspection and the release of negative energies from the past year. Traditionally, candles are lit and offerings are left to honor the deceased and the deities. Traditional rituals take the form of bonfires, divination sessions, and feasts dedicated to the ancestors.
The evolution of Samhain into Halloween took place over the centuries with the influence of Christianity. When it spread across Europe, the Church tried to incorporate pagan celebrations by establishing All Saints' Day on November 1st, followed by "All Hallows Eve" on October 31st, which later became "Halloween." Ancient practices, such as offerings to spirits and lighting lanterns, evolved into traditions like trick-or-treating and carved pumpkins (although originally, turnips were used, as they were inexpensive, to hold a lantern).
What rituals for Samhain?
During Samhain, rituals to honor ancestors, protect oneself, and engage in introspection are customary. One of the most common rituals is the creation of an altar for the ancestors, where photos, candles, and offerings such as fruits or sacred herbs are placed to honor the deceased and guide them. You can also organize a Dumb Supper, a silent meal where a place is reserved for the spirits of loved ones who have passed away.
Divination rituals, such as tarot reading or clairvoyance, are especially powerful at Samhain. Spells for protection and banishment of negative energies are also practiced to prepare for the new year.
