Saint Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila

General Presentation of Saint Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila, born Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada in 1515, is a major mystical figure of the Catholic Church and founder of the Discalced Carmelite order. After joining the Carmel against her family's wishes, she experienced a profound spiritual conversion around the age of 40, marked by mystical ecstasies. She devoted the rest of her life to reforming the Carmelite order, advocating strict observance of poverty and contemplative life. She founded several monasteries across Spain, despite much resistance. Teresa was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970, the first woman to receive this title, in recognition of her mystical and theological writings, notably The Interior Castle and The Book of Life. She died in 1582 in Alba de Tormes and is celebrated on October 15.

She is also sometimes shown with a crucifix, illustrating her attachment to the crucified Christ.

Myths of Saint Teresa of Avila

One of Teresa’s most famous mystical experiences is the transverberation, a moment of ecstasy where she felt united with Christ by an arrow symbolizing divine love. This experience, although intimate, raised suspicions within the Church, requiring years of discernment and spiritual guidance for Teresa. Her life was marked by many visions and mystical experiences, but also by her hard work to reform the Carmelite order, despite institutional and political resistance of the time.
