General presentation of Saint Dominic
Saint Dominic of Guzman, born in 1170 in Old Castile (Spain), is the founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans. From a young age, he stood out for his austerity, fervent prayer, and desire to defend the faith. After theological studies, he dedicated himself to fighting heresies, notably Catharism in southern France. Deeply moved by the spiritual and material sufferings of his time, he adopted a life of radical poverty, preaching the Gospel and working for the reconciliation of souls with God. In 1215, he obtained papal approval for his order, dedicated to preaching, prayer, and study. He died in 1221 in Bologna. His feast is celebrated on August 8.

Symbols and appearances of Saint Dominic
Saint Dominic is often depicted in Dominican habit, with a book and a pilgrim's staff, symbols of his preaching mission. One of the symbols most associated with him is a dog holding a torch, a vision his mother reportedly had that foreshadowed his role in spreading the faith worldwide. He is also sometimes shown with a rosary, being considered the initiator of this Marian devotion.
Myths of Saint Dominic
Among the miracles attributed to Saint Dominic, it is said that rain would fall around him without touching him, and objects dropped into a river were found intact. Another famous legend is that the Virgin Mary taught him the prayer of the Rosary, which became a powerful tool for converting heretics. He is also said to have had visions of Saint Francis of Assisi even before meeting him in person in Rome.
