Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

General presentation of Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, venerated as one of the most famous martyrs of Christianity, is said to have lived in the early 4th century. Born into a noble family in Alexandria, she converted to Christianity after a mystical vision. Gifted with remarkable intelligence, she defended the Christian faith before Emperor Maximin and his pagan philosophers. Her legend tells that she managed to convert several pagan scholars during a theological dispute. Condemned by the emperor for her faith and resistance, she was tortured on a wheel, a torture that miraculously failed, and she was ultimately beheaded. After her death, angels are said to have carried her body to Mount Sinai, where a monastery has been dedicated to her since the 6th century.
