Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a Benedictine mystic, abbess, and German visionary. She is known for her spiritual visions, theological writings, and work in natural medicine. From the age of 42, she began recording her divine visions in a series of works, including Scivias (Know the Ways), The Book of the Merits of Life, and The Book of Divine Works. In 2012, she was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI, thus recognizing her importance in Christian theology. Her feast day is celebrated on September 17.
