Lakshmi

Attributions

Lakshmi is traditionally considered the goddess of wealth and prosperity, both in material and spiritual contexts. She is the consort of Vishnu, the protector of the universe, which reinforces her role in maintaining cosmic order and prosperity. Lakshmi is also associated with beauty, love, and fertility. She is worshiped in homes and businesses, invoked to ensure prosperity, and is a central figure during the Diwali festival, where prayers are offered to receive her blessing for the coming year.

Symbols and Appearances

Lakshmi is generally depicted as a beautiful and graceful woman, draped in a red or golden sari, colors associated with wealth and activity. She is often shown sitting or standing on a lotus, a symbol of purity and spiritual truth, floating on cosmic waters. Lakshmi may have four arms, representing the four goals of human life: morality (dharma), desire (kama), wealth (artha), and liberation (moksha). In her hands, she may hold lotuses, coins, a pot of gold, and sometimes a book, symbols of her sovereignty over prosperity and knowledge.

Myths

One of the most famous stories of Lakshmi is her reemergence during the churning of the ocean of milk, a major cosmic event in Hindu mythology where gods and demons cooperate to obtain amrita, the nectar of immortality. Lakshmi was born from the ocean, holding a pot of nectar, and chose Vishnu as her husband. She is intrinsically linked to maintaining cosmic order and distributing wealth and prosperity.

Spiritual Message

Lakshmi’s spiritual message is that true prosperity results from good character, generosity, and piety. She teaches that wealth must be earned and used ethically for the good of all. Lakshmi reminds her followers not to be corrupted by material wealth and to always seek spiritual riches. She encourages diligence, merit, compassion, and gratitude, which are essential to maintaining her grace.
