Attributions

Kali is the goddess of destruction, time, and transformation. She is often seen as an incarnation of Shakti, the primordial feminine energy, and represents the destructive force necessary to preserve cosmic order. Kali is invoked to remove spiritual obstacles, destroy evil and illusions, and guide her followers toward liberation (moksha). She is also associated with protecting the weak and fighting against injustices, using her fury to combat negative and corrupt forces.

Symbols and Appearances

Kali is often depicted with black or dark blue skin, symbolizing the infinity of the cosmos. She has four arms, each holding a symbolic object: a sword, a severed head, a bowl of blood, and sometimes a trident or a flame. Her tongue is usually sticking out, a sign of her thirst for battle against injustice and evil. She wears a skirt made of human arms and a garland of severed heads, representing the egos and illusions she has conquered. Kali is often shown dancing on the body of her consort, Shiva, illustrating control over destructive forces and her role in the regeneration of the universe.

Myths

Kali appears in many mythological stories, but she is mainly known for her role in the battle against the demon Raktabija. Every drop of Raktabija’s blood that fell to the ground created a clone of himself. Kali helped the other deities by licking Raktabija’s blood and eating his clones to prevent their multiplication, ultimately destroying him and helping to restore cosmic order. This story highlights her ability to absorb and transform negativity into positivity.

Spiritual Message

Kali’s spiritual message is one of liberation through the destruction of illusions and material attachments. She teaches that death and destruction are not only ends but also means of renewal and transformation. Kali urges her followers to face their fears and embrace the changes necessary for their spiritual growth. She is a reminder that true strength comes from accepting the transience of life and the reality of death.
