Symbols and Appearances
Durga is usually depicted with eight to ten arms, each holding a different object with symbolic meaning, such as a conch shell, a discus, a sword, a trident, a bow, an arrow, a lotus, a staff, and a rosary. These objects symbolize the various attributes and powers she possesses to protect the universe. She is often shown riding a lion or a tiger, which symbolizes her power, determination, and ability to control animalistic and instinctive forces. Durga is generally dressed in red, the color of action and dynamism.
Myths
The most famous myth associated with Durga is her battle with the buffalo demon Mahishasura. According to mythology, Mahishasura had received a blessing that made him invincible against any man. When the gods were unable to defeat him, they created Durga, endowed with the powers of each deity. Durga fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights, finally defeating him on the tenth day, which is celebrated during the Navaratri and Durga Puja festivals, major events in many parts of India.
