The Night Washerwomen

The Night Washerwomen

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). So, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

Let's discover together the legend of the Night Washerwomen, or Kannerezed Noz in Breton. They are often considered the equivalent of the White Lady in popular folklore.

In the Breton countryside, on moonless nights, it is said that strange noises can sometimes be heard coming from rivers and washhouses away from villages. These are the Night Washerwomen, spectral apparitions of women eternally busy washing laundry. These figures are often considered lost souls, punished for sins committed in life, such as infanticide or murder.

These washerwomen are not just ghosts: they have a frightening presence and surprisingly show a lot of agility in their movements. They appear as old women, dressed in rags, bent over their work. Their hands are rough and skeletal, and they scrub and beat the laundry with desperate energy. The laundry, strangely, always seems stained with blood, and despite their efforts, the stains never disappear.

Their appearance is accompanied by distinctive sounds: the splashing of water, the rustling of sheets, and sometimes, a melancholic and eerie song. These sounds, the legend says, can be heard from afar, and it is advised to avoid them. But the most terrifying thing is that if a passerby ventures too close or is drawn by their song, the washerwomen may call out to them.

They then ask for help to twist and wring out their laundry. However, helping a washerwoman is dangerous. You must twist the laundry in the same direction as they do, otherwise the passerby risks being cursed or, according to some versions of the legend, having their arms twisted or being dragged into the waters to die.

The legend of the Night Washerwomen is often interpreted as a warning and a consequence of immoral acts. It also highlights the belief in redemption and punishment in the afterlife.

Also avoid wandering near washhouses and rivers in the middle of the night...
