The cross of Saint Andrew and the letter X hold an important place in hermetic literature. Regarding them, Fulcanelli mentions what he considers one of the keys to the Pythagorean cabala, or this "universal language" that hermetic philosophers sought to decipher. He notably invites the reader to turn to a discreet but remarkable work: the Clavicula of Hermetic Science, whose last page presents a diagram he finds particularly revealing.
One of the main interests of this treatise lies in the cabalistic interpretation it offers of the Pythagorean table, assimilated to the "Tetragram of the Greeks" and the Schemhamphorash of the Hebrews. Its author, whose identity remains uncertain but who some suppose to be from Iceland or Norway, seeks to recover what he considers the primitive alchemical doctrine. According to him, this knowledge was born in ancient Egypt before being transmitted in a veiled form by the Greeks, the Hebrews, and then the Arabs. The true understanding of this heritage could then only be obtained through careful observation of Nature, the sole bearer of original wisdom.
Written in Latin in 1732, the Clavicula of Hermetic Science saw its first printed edition in Marburg in 1746. A new edition appeared in Amsterdam in 1751, enriched with a French translation presented alongside the Latin text. The work was then reprinted in 1786, still accompanied by its French translation, but without indication of the place of publication. Despite its brevity, this treatise has maintained a special place in alchemical literature due to the symbolic richness it contains and its declared intention to trace back to the oldest foundations of the Hermetic Art.
