As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (specifically in the south of Finistère). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices, some more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish lesser-known legends from Breton history.
Let’s discover together the legend of the witch of Locronan, a town in Finistère considered the source of the Breton soul...
In the picturesque town of Locronan lived a woman of exceptional beauty and intelligence, but whose true nature was a source of mystery. This woman, known as Arzhela, lived secluded from the town, in a house hidden by the dense forest bordering Locronan. Arzhela possessed ancestral knowledge, inherited from her ancestors, which made her a respected but also feared healer. For Arzhela held a secret: she was a witch.
The villagers had the strange impression of always seeing her in the same clothes and with the same appearance, regardless of the generation. Neither a child nor an old woman.

The witch of Locronan could communicate with the forces of nature, summon the spirits of the woods and waters, and above all, she had the gift of transformation, allowing her to take the form of any animal or blend into the elements. Thanks to her powers, she protected Locronan from diseases, poor harvests, and negative energies. The inhabitants, although fearful of her abilities, had learned to offer gifts to gain her favor.
However, Arzhela’s kindness had its limits. When someone committed an injustice or threatened the balance of nature, the witch took revenge with ruthless severity. It was said that the guilty were trapped by a spell, turned to stone or condemned to wander the forests as animals, lost forever.

The legend tells that one day, a wealthy merchant tried to claim part of the sacred forest to build a large manor. Arzhela, furious at this desecration, transformed into a crow and flew over the town, issuing a terrifying warning.

The merchant, ignoring the warning, continued with his plans. The following night, a storm of unprecedented violence struck Locronan, destroying the merchant’s unfinished house and sparing the rest of the town.
The merchant was never seen again, and some say he still wanders the woods in the form of a wolf, mourning his greed.

It’s unclear whether Arzhela is still among us. But celebrations have always taken place to mark this connection to nature. In any case, be attentive to the crows that cross your path...
