As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (specifically in the south of Finistère). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices, some more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish lesser-known legends from Breton history.
Let’s discover together the legend of the Holly Fairy. Note that this is a free interpretation of the tale by Adolphe Orain published in 1904.
In the enchanted commune of Essé, in Ille-et-Vilaine, there is a place shrouded in mystery, the Dolmen of the Fairy Rock. This ancient monument, made up of 43 massive blocks of schist stacked with almost supernatural precision, was once surrounded by a vast forest, a silent witness to bygone eras. According to another legend, these blocks were placed here by fairies, hence their name.
In the story, a couple, Jérôme and Gertrude, lived in a modest cabin in Essé. Every day, they worked hard in the woods, cutting wood to make a living. One evening, as they rested, exhausted and disillusioned by their precarious existence, they lamented their difficult fate.
Suddenly, a strange noise caught their attention. A large holly tree, standing majestically near their cabin, seemed to be the source of the sound. To their great surprise, a beautiful creature descended from it. It was the Holly Fairy, a vision of grace, with a crown of holly and red berries adorning her ears.

The fairy, moved by their complaints, offered them a purse containing endless gold coins. However, she set one condition: they must never try to discover what was hidden in a mysterious pot buried at the heart of the Fairy Rock. Jérôme and Gertrude solemnly promised to respect this condition.

At first, they lived in euphoria, spending the gold without counting. But soon, luxury and idleness bored them. Gertrude, in particular, was tormented by curiosity to discover the contents of the pot.
One evening, unable to resist, she secretly went to the Fairy Rock. Despite Jérôme’s pleas, she dug up and opened the pot, revealing not a treasure, but ashes and bones. Opening the pot broke their promise, and the gold in the purse disappeared immediately.
As the couple wept over their loss, the Holly Fairy reappeared, confronting them about their failure. She reminded them of their words about Eve’s fall and highlighted the irony of their own downfall. Their disobedience had sealed their fate.

The fairy disappeared, leaving Jérôme and Gertrude in even greater misery. They had lost not only their fleeting wealth but also the simplicity and satisfaction they found in their hardworking life.
Thus ends the legend of the Holly Fairy. It continues to resonate through the ages, an eternal warning against greed and the importance of promises. It reminds us that the true treasures of life often lie in what we already have and in our ability to appreciate the simple things in life.
