General Presentation of the Apostle James the Less

Saint James the Less, also called James son of Alphaeus, is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the first bishop of Jerusalem. He is nicknamed "the Less" to distinguish him from James the Greater, another apostle. According to tradition, James was a cousin of Jesus and was a key figure in the early Church. He is notably known for playing a leading role at the Council of Jerusalem, where it was decided that Gentile converts to Christianity would not be subject to Jewish ceremonial laws. He is also the author of the Epistle of James in the New Testament. He is believed to have been martyred in 62 AD, probably stoned after being thrown from the top of the Temple in Jerusalem. He is celebrated on May 3rd.

He is also venerated as a model of faith and justice, preaching charity and humility in his teachings.
