Since antiquity, it has been used for engraving cameos and intaglios, making it an early stone for seals, rings, and talismans. Thus, Roman soldiers went into battle with Sardonyx amulets engraved with Mars or Hercules, to receive courage and protection in combat. More broadly, it works by helping clarity, increasing friendship, and preventing discord.
