Macabre - Illustrated Treatise on Death

34,95 €
Low stock

Death is a universal certainty that humanity has continuously explored and depicted throughout the ages. From medieval danse macabre and the Tibetan Book of the Dead to Renaissance anatomical paintings, through Gothic literature and Last Judgment frescoes, art has been a privileged means to try to understand the inevitable. Rituals also bear witness to this quest: from the Día de los Muertos in Mexico to Egyptian mummifications, each culture has shaped its own symbols and practices to tame the unknown.

Macabre is a work of dark beauty and unprecedented ambition, offering an in-depth exploration of representations of death across civilizations. Each chapter, written by a specialist – museum curator, academic, or journalist – provides a richly illustrated analysis with iconic images and artifacts. Carved skulls, death dances, funerary statuettes, ex-libris, photographs from another time… So many visual testimonies from the Richard Harris collection, tracing 2000 years of fascination and interpretations of the afterlife.

Death is a universal certainty that humanity has always sought to understand, tame, or transcend. Faced with the inevitable, civilizations have forged myths, beliefs, and rites, leaving behind an artistic and cultural heritage of immeasurable richness. From the medieval danse macabre, depicting equality before the reaper, to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, a spiritual guide for the journey beyond, death has inspired deeply symbolic works. Renaissance anatomical paintings, at the crossroads of science and metaphysics, reveal an ambiguous fascination with the deceased body, while Gothic literature and Last Judgment frescoes recall the fear of punishment or the hope of salvation. From the Mexican Day of the Dead, where the spirits of ancestors are celebrated, to Egyptian mummifications intended to preserve the soul for eternity, each culture has developed its own rituals to give meaning to the unknown and weave a connection between the world of the living and that of the dead.

Macabre is a work of dark beauty and unprecedented ambition, offering a fascinating dive into representations of death across ages and continents. Each chapter, written by a specialist – museum curator, academic, or journalist – provides an in-depth analysis of the many faces of death, whether religious, artistic, or philosophical. Richly illustrated, the book relies on striking iconography, composed of objects and works from the Richard Harris collection: carved skulls, allegorical frescoes, funerary statuettes, ancient engravings, esoteric ex-libris, post-mortem photographs… Witnesses to two millennia of fascination with the beyond, these images tell the story of how humanity, everywhere and always, has tried to unravel the ultimate mystery.

Here, we don’t judge.

No matter where you come from, what you believe in, or what you’re looking for: you belong here. You can be a beginner, curious, a casual practitioner, or a daily witch. What matters is sincere intention.

We believe in all forms of magic.

High magic and its rigorous rituals deserve as much respect as spells passed down in the countryside. We read grimoires, respect rites, listen to old stories. Everything practiced with faith deserves serious and curious attention.

We welcome all traditions.

We don’t put one path above another. We talk hoodoo, kabbalah, Christian prayers, elemental magic, folk rituals, Celtic symbols. What matters is respect. Not the label.

We work cleanly.

Each package is carefully prepared by us, here in France. Before shipping, it is purified so it arrives at your home cleansed and positively charged. We strive to use recyclable packaging and reduce our impact as much as possible.

We stay available.

Customer service is us. Not an AI, not a robot, not a call center. If you have a question, a doubt, a problem, you reach us—the same people who select the products, write the descriptions, and prepare the packages.

We stay human-sized.

We are a small passionate team with big ambitions, hands in the herbs, books, and boxes. And we want to keep it that way.
