A scholar passionate about Hermeticism, Kabbalah, grimoires, and ancient magical traditions, he participated in the founding of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1888, an initiatory society that would have a major influence on modern Western esotericism. Translator of important texts such as the Kabbala Denudata, the Key of Solomon, and The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, Mathers played a central role in transmitting many occult teachings in the English language. His work, blending ceremonial magic, symbolism, and initiatory traditions, has left a lasting mark on several generations of occultists and authors of the 20th century.
