Traditions
Hoodoo

This High John oil comes from the Hoodoo tradition. It is made with fragments of the famous High John root infused in an anointing oil.

In the Hoodoo tradition, this oil accompanies rituals associated with luck, courage, self-confidence, and authority. These correspondences arise from the symbolism and beliefs of this tradition; they do not constitute a promise of results.

This oil is a talisman in its own right. You can also apply it to a High John root or to a green or yellow candle. You can also place a few drops in a mojo bag to charge it.

⸺ Please note: for ritual use only, not for consumption or cosmetic use.

Buy High John Oil in Our Esoteric Shop

High John oil belongs to the hoodoo tradition and is based on the famous High John the Conqueror root. This preparation contains fragments of this root infused in an anointing oil, following a principle widely used in African-American rootwork. In these practices, the High John root represents strength, endurance, and the ability to overcome obstacles.

A Preparation Linked to Victory and Luck

High John oil supports work aimed at strengthening a person's position in the face of adversity. It is used in efforts to attract luck, achieve victory over opponents, gain authority, or assert personal charisma. It also appears in operations related to money, gambling, or situations requiring boldness and determination.

A Use Similar to a Talisman

In the hoodoo tradition, this oil functions similarly to a liquid talisman. It can be applied directly to a High John root, on a green or yellow candle, or incorporated into a ritual work intended to support success. A few drops can also be placed in a mojo to enhance its power and accompany the formulated intention.

The right gesture

How do you use ritual oil?

Ritual oil is primarily used by anointing: applying a very small amount of oil to a surface associated with the magical work. A few drops are generally enough. The aim is not to soak the object, but to incorporate it into the ritual through a deliberate gesture.

It may be used on its own or with a candle, talisman, petition paper, sachet or other elements suited to the work being undertaken.

Suggested amount A few drops A very thin layer is enough.

To anoint a candle

One of the most common uses is to apply the oil to a ritual candle. Put a few drops on your fingers, then spread a very thin layer over the wax. There is no need to saturate the candle with oil.

The direction of anointing may also form part of the ritual. In some practices, one works towards oneself to attract or draw in, and away from oneself to repel, distance or banish. This is not a universal rule: when a specific ritual gives different directions, its own instructions take priority.

Do not put oil on the wick or allow it to run down towards the base of the flame.

On a talisman or ritual object

Oil can be used to lightly anoint a talisman, amulet, ritual tool, stone, medal or another object used in the working.

Place one drop on a finger or small cloth and apply it to the chosen spot. For porous, fragile or painted objects, or anything that may stain, place the oil on a nearby support rather than directly on the object.

On petition paper

A small amount of oil may be applied to a paper bearing a name, request, seal or written intention. A few dots are usually enough, for example at the four corners and centre, or in the arrangement specified by the ritual.

Do not soak the paper: a few marks are enough to incorporate it into the working.

In a sachet or ritual preparation

A few drops may also be added to a ritual sachet, herbs, powder or selected objects gathered into a preparation. The oil then connects the different elements to the same purpose.

Use it sparingly, especially with plant matter. A few drops will scent and anoint the preparation without making it greasy or damp.

On the altar or in ritual work

Oil may be placed on selected points of an altar or ritual surface, or around a central object. It can mark a sign, cross, circle or simply a few points determined by the practice being followed.

Some workings also pair anointing with a prayer, psalm, invocation or formula spoken during application. The oil then becomes a physical support for the ritual gesture rather than something used in large quantities.

A question about this product?

We have the answers.

What are the magical properties of High John oil in Hoodoo?

High John the Conqueror oil is considered a particularly powerful preparation for promoting victory, luck, courage, and personal power. It supports workings intended to overcome adversity, triumph over opposition, strengthen one's authority, or attract success. It is also used in rituals for prosperity, good luck in games, and business success. Its properties are based on the traditional correspondences and beliefs of African American rootwork.

Who is High John the Conqueror, and why is his root so important?

High John the Conqueror, or John the Conqueror, is a legendary figure in African American folklore, particularly associated with resistance to oppression. In folk stories, he triumphs over his adversaries through intelligence, cunning, and courage. His spirit is traditionally associated with a root that has become one of Hoodoo's most renowned talismans. This root symbolizes the ability to overcome obstacles, preserve one's freedom, and reclaim control over one's own destiny.

Can High John oil be used to win a court case or achieve a professional victory?

Yes, High John oil is traditionally used in magical workings devoted to victory over adversaries and success in confrontational situations. It can accompany legal proceedings, difficult negotiations, job interviews, or situations requiring courage and authority. In Hoodoo, it is particularly associated with the ability to defend one's interests, assert one's position, and overcome opposition. However, its ritual use does not guarantee any legal decision or professional outcome.

How do you use High John oil on a root or in a mojo?

High John oil can be used to ritually tend a High John the Conqueror root worn as a talisman. In the Hoodoo tradition, this practice is called feeding, or “feeding” the charm: a few drops of oil are applied to the root to symbolically renew its power. You can also apply a small amount to an absorbent item placed in a mojo bag dedicated to luck, victory, or authority. The mojo prepared this way can be kept among your personal belongings.

How do you use High John oil on a candle, and what precautions should you take?

House of Conjure High John Oil can be used to anoint a green candle for prosperity work or a yellow candle for luck, success, and personal power. Apply a very small amount of oil to the cold wax, away from the wick, then accompany the burning with a prayer or a specific intention. This preparation contains fragments of High John root infused in an anointing oil and comes in a 10 ml bottle. It is intended exclusively for ritual use, not for food or cosmetics. Avoid applying it to the skin and any direct contact with flames.
