The Hermetic Path
An iconic figure of the Hermetic tradition, Hermes Trismegistus, whose name means "Thrice-Great," was long regarded as a sage from the most ancient antiquity, sometimes even presented as a contemporary of Moses. However, historians place his emergence in the Hellenistic period, where he takes the form of a master of wisdom to whom philosophical, religious, magical, and alchemical texts are attributed. Heir to the Greek god Hermes, the Roman Mercury, and the Egyptian god Thoth, he embodies the convergence of several spiritual traditions of the ancient world.
During the Renaissance, scholars saw in him the bearer of an original wisdom predating Christianity. The writings attributed to him were then considered remnants of a primordial revelation passed down to a circle of disciples. This doctrine, nourished by various philosophical and religious influences, gradually took the name Hermeticism. Despite the reputation for secrecy attached to it, Hermes' teaching does not present itself as deliberately obscure knowledge. The term "hermetic," which today evokes something closed or difficult to understand, primarily refers to a body of reflections dedicated to the knowledge of man, the cosmos, and the laws that unite them.
In this work, Françoise Bonardel traces the many faces of Hermes Trismegistus and follows the evolution of his legacy from late antiquity to the contemporary era. She explores the main currents under his patronage, whether gnosis, alchemy, symbolic interpretation, or the depth psychology developed by Carl Gustav Jung. Through this journey, she highlights the richness and enduring nature of a tradition that continues to exert a major influence on Western thought.

This work offers an in-depth exploration of the figure of Hermes Trismegistus, a central character in Western Hermeticism. Heir to the Greek god Hermes, the Roman Mercury, and the Egyptian god Thoth, he embodies the convergence of several religious and philosophical traditions of the ancient world. Long regarded as the bearer of primordial wisdom, he remains one of the most influential figures in the history of esoteric thought.
The origins of the Hermetic tradition
The book traces the birth of Hermeticism during the Hellenistic period and examines how the texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus were seen during the Renaissance as remnants of a very ancient revelation. Françoise Bonardel shows how this tradition was built around reflections on humanity, the cosmos, and the laws that connect them. Far from the image of deliberately obscure knowledge, Hermeticism here appears as a quest to understand the world and the place of human beings in the universe.
A living legacy through the centuries
The work follows the evolution of Hermetic influence from late Antiquity to the contemporary era. It explores the currents that developed under its patronage, notably Gnosticism, alchemy, symbolic interpretation, and studies on depth psychology. Through this study, the reader discovers the richness of a tradition that has deeply marked Western culture and continues today to inspire philosophical, symbolic, and spiritual reflections.
Françoise Bonardel is a French philosopher, agrégée in philosophy, and holds a doctorate in letters and human sciences. A professor of philosophy of religions at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, she has devoted much of her research to alchemy, hermeticism, Buddhism, and the study of the imagination. A student of the thinker Gilbert Durand, she is the author of numerous works that have become references.
