Introduction to Guédé Nibo
Guédé Nibo is a particular Vodou loa because he was the first to die a violent death. He is responsible for watching over the souls of the dead who suffered an unnatural, often tragic death.
The Guédé are a large family of loas connected to death and fertility. They represent different aspects of death and the soul’s transitions, each manifesting in a specific way. Their leaders are Baron Samedi, master of cemeteries and spirits of the dead, and Maman Brigitte, guardian of graves and protector of the deceased. Together, they watch over the passages between the world of the living and that of the dead, with Guédé Nibo playing a key role for souls who left this world under violent circumstances.
