The cross spread (or Celtic cross) is one of the most iconic and widely used methods in cartomancy, both with tarot decks and oracles. This method is popular due to its simplicity and clarity, allowing a comprehensive analysis of a given situation.

The cross spread consists of laying out five cards in a cross-shaped configuration, each position having a specific and distinct meaning. This method allows discovering various aspects of a question or situation, including present influences, obstacles, available resources, future challenges, and the probable outcome.

Historically, the cross spread has European origins, notably linked to the spread of the famous Tarot of Marseille.

1. Purify the cards

Purifying the cards before a reading is always useful to eliminate negative or residual energies. There are several classic purification methods:

  • By fumigation: pass the cards through the smoke of sage, cedar, or any other purifying incense. This method is ancient and widely used to cleanse and raise the energy of the cards.

  • By crystal cluster: place a purifying crystal like amethyst or clear quartz on the deck of cards for a few hours. Crystals are known for their energetic properties that can revitalize the cards.

  • By the moon: exposing the cards to moonlight, especially during the full moon, is another natural purification method.

    2. Define the question asked

Before starting a cross spread, you must formulate a clear and precise question. The clarity of the question directly influences the relevance and accuracy of the answers obtained through the cards.

    Indeed:

    • A well-defined question helps focus energy and attention on a specific aspect of the querent's life. This helps avoid vague or ambiguous answers.

    • The cards respond according to the question asked. A clear question guides the reading and allows the cards to be interpreted in a specific context.

    • Formulating a precise question requires deep reflection on what you really want to know. This encourages introspection and awareness of the consultant's true concerns.

To formulate an effective question, I advise you to avoid closed questions (which require a simple "yes" or "no" answer) and favor open questions that explore the "how," "why," and "what are" influences or consequences.

For example, instead of asking "Will I find a job?", it is better to ask a question like "What obstacles are affecting my job search and how can I overcome them?".

      3. Shuffle the cards

Generally, there are three ways to shuffle the cards before drawing:

Traditional shuffle Hold the deck in your hands and shuffle them traditionally, as you would with a regular deck of cards. Do this several times to thoroughly shuffle the cards.
Fan shuffle Spread the cards face down on a flat surface and shuffle them by moving them with your hands. Make sure all the cards are well mixed.
Cut shuffle Once the cards are well shuffled, cut the deck into three distinct piles and put them back together in a different order. Repeat this operation several times if necessary.

There is no method more effective than another; use the one you feel most comfortable with.

      4. Draw the cards

Like shuffling, you can choose one of these drawing methods, which follow the same logic:

Intuitive method After shuffling the cards, fan them out face down in front of you. Pass your hand over the cards and choose those that intuitively attract you. Trust your instinct to select the cards.
Cutting method Divide the deck into three piles after shuffling, then recombine into a single pile. Then, draw the cards from the top of the deck in the order required by the cross spread.
Picking method Hold the deck face down in your hands and draw the cards from the top of the deck, one by one, in the order required for the cross spread. You can also draw cards from different parts of the deck by "picking" them according to your intuition.

      5. Lay out the cards in a Celtic cross

Mastering the cross spread (or Celtic cross)

The cross layout of the cards is at the heart of the cross spread. This configuration allows for a clear and structured overview of a situation, exploring different facets and highlighting the influences and dynamics at play. Here is a detailed explanation of each position in this spread.

Card 1 The present or central point This card represents the heart of the current situation. It reflects the querent’s state of mind, immediate circumstances, or the main theme of the question asked. It is the starting point of the spread, providing a basis for understanding the overall context.
Card 2 The challenge Placed across the first card, this card highlights the challenges, obstacles, or opposing forces complicating the current situation. It may represent internal blockages (such as fears or doubts) or external obstacles (such as unfavorable people or events). Understanding this position helps identify what is slowing down or preventing progress.
Card 3 Resources or support This card, placed below the central card, symbolizes the assets, strengths, or support available to the querent. It may indicate personal talents, supportive people, or favorable opportunities. This position is crucial for recognizing what can be used or leveraged to overcome the obstacles identified earlier.
Card 4 Future challenges or upcoming influences Located to the left of the central card, this card reveals potential challenges or influences that will manifest in the future. It may indicate trials to overcome, upcoming changes, or emerging trends. Knowing these influences allows the querent to prepare and adapt to what might arise on their path.
Card 5 The objective This card, placed at the top of the cross, offers an overview and a summary of the information revealed by the other cards. It represents the likely outcome or the general direction the situation will take if the energies and influences remain constant. It is a concluding card that helps to understand the potential outcome and to draw lessons from the previous cards.
Card 6 The distant past Located on the right, this card explores influences and events from the distant past that led to the current situation. It can reveal important patterns or lessons that continue to affect the querent.
Card 7 The recent past Placed at the top right, this card represents events or influences from the recent past. It provides insight into the immediate circumstances that contributed to the present situation and highlights recent transitions.
Card 8 The querent Below the recent past, this card reflects the querent's attitude, mindset, or feelings about the situation. It can also indicate the querent's current actions or behaviors and how they influence the situation.
Card 9 External influences Located below the querent, this card examines external influences, including people, events, or conditions affecting the situation. It helps understand external factors that the querent cannot directly control.
Card 10 Hopes and fears Placed at the bottom of the column, this card explores the querent's desires and fears regarding the situation. It can reveal unconscious expectations or deep concerns that influence the querent's decisions and actions.

      6. Interpreting the cards

Identify recurring themes or patterns that appear in the drawn cards. These themes can provide valuable clues about the main aspects of the situation or the dynamics at play.

Observe how the cards interact with each other and trust your intuition. Sometimes, the impression you get when seeing a card in a certain position can give you additional insights that are not immediately obvious.

Remember that each spread is a snapshot of a dynamic situation. Encourage the querent to see the spread as guidance rather than a fixed and unchangeable prediction.

      7. One last piece of advice

Like any practice, the Celtic cross spread requires training. The first results may be difficult to interpret, but it will become clearer over time.
