1. Necessary Materials |
Anointing candles involves coating a candle with magical oil, sometimes combined with herbs or powders, to charge it with a specific intention. This preparation helps to enhance the power of the ritual by harmonizing the candle’s energy with that of the intended goal. The oil used acts as a kind of conductor for the intention, and the act of anointing becomes a sacred gesture that links the operator’s energy to that of the candle. Explanation follows.
1. Necessary Materials
To anoint a candle in magic, you will need the following items:
-
A candle: choose a candle according to the intention of your ritual (for more information, you can consult our article on candle magic).
-
An oil: use one of our anointing oils specifically suited to your intention. You will surely find an oil adapted to your goal.
-
Herbs or powders (optional): dried herbs or powders can be added to the oil to strengthen the candle’s energy.
-
Incense: it is recommended to burn incense during the preparation and ritual to purify the space and raise the energy. Choose a ritual incense that matches your intention.
Always remember to purify your objects and tools before each ritual with sage incense.
2. How to Anoint a Candle
Before starting to anoint the candle, take time to center yourself and clearly define your intention. Take a few moments to sit calmly, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Visualize your goal or desire. Focus on the energy you want to infuse into the candle.
Once your intention is clear, select the appropriate oil according to your ritual’s goal. Hold the bottle of oil in your hands and, if you wish, you can say your intention out loud to transfer your energy to the oil.
Now it’s time to anoint your candle. Here is a simple and effective method:

-
Moisten your thumb and index finger with the oil.
- Hold the candle with your other hand.
-
To attract to you (wealth, protection, success, etc.), apply the oil from the wick down to the base of the candle.
-
To repel or banish (negativity, obstacles, evil eye, etc.), apply the oil from the base up to the wick.
3. Additions to Strengthen the Intention
3.1. Candle Carving
Some rituals will ask you to carve the specific goal of your ritual onto the candle. The principle is the same as described below: write the word or name from top to bottom to attract to you, or from bottom to top to banish. You can also write it on a piece of paper and slip it inside the candle if possible: the principle remains the same.
3.2. Adding Herbs or Powders
This step is optional but can add an extra dimension to your ritual. After applying the oil, you can gently roll the candle in herbs or powders that correspond to your intention.
There you go, now you know how to simply anoint a candle! There are variations depending on the complexity of the rituals, which we will cover in other practical guides to come.

Bonjour,
