Styrax

General Description of Styrax

Styrax is an aromatic resin obtained mainly from the bark of trees of the Liquidambar genus, notably Liquidambar orientalis and Liquidambar styraciflua. These trees are native to the Eastern Mediterranean, Asia Minor, and certain regions of North America. Styrax resin appears as a thick, sticky, brownish gum. 

History of Styrax

Styrax has a long history of use dating back to Antiquity. The Egyptians used it in religious rituals and to embalm the dead. The Greeks and Romans valued styrax for its medicinal and fragrant properties. In the Eastern Mediterranean, it was commonly used in sacred incense and perfume blends. Traditional medicines of various cultures used it to treat respiratory ailments, pain, and inflammations. Today, styrax continues to be used in spiritual rituals, perfumery, and aromatherapy.

Styrax belongs to the olfactory family of balsamic resins. Its scent is characterized by balsamic, vanilla, slightly woody, and sweet notes.
