Labdanum

Labdanum

General Description of Labdanum

Labdanum is an aromatic resin obtained from the leaves and twigs of certain species of rockroses, notably Cistus ladanifer and Cistus creticus. These shrubs are native to Mediterranean regions, especially Greece, Crete, and Spain. Labdanum resin appears as a thick, sticky gum ranging in color from dark brown to black.

History of Labdanum

Labdanum has a long history of use dating back to Antiquity. It was known to the Egyptians, who used it in religious rituals and to embalm the dead. The ancient Greeks and Romans also valued it for its medicinal and fragrant properties. In Crete, shepherds traditionally collected the resin by combing the hair of their goats that grazed on rockroses. In the Middle Ages, labdanum was used in Europe in incense and medicinal ointments. Today, labdanum is still used in spiritual rituals, perfumery, and aromatherapy.
