General description of Elemí

Elemí is an aromatic resin from trees of the Canarium genus, mainly Canarium luzonicum, native to the Philippines and other regions of Southeast Asia. The resin is harvested by cutting the tree bark, allowing a translucent sap to flow, which then hardens into pale yellow to amber gum pieces.

The use of Elemí dates back to Antiquity, where it was valued for its medicinal properties and fragrance. The ancient Egyptians used it in embalming rituals and as sacred incense. In Europe, it was introduced by Arab traders and became an important ingredient in medieval pharmacopoeia.
