What does the Mars symbol mean in astrology?

3 min read

The glyph of Mars, ♂, shows a circle from which an arrow points upward and to the right. The traditional reading sees in it the shield and spear of Mars, the Roman god of war, equivalent to Ares in the Greek world. In astrology, this mythological lineage remains highly visible: Mars represents action, cutting, combat, effort, courage, heat, desire, and the ability to impose a direction. In alchemy, the same sign designates iron, the metal of weapons and tools.

Why do we see a shield and a spear?

NASA describes ♂ as the shield and spear of the god Mars. The circle can be read as the round shield, and the arrow as the weapon projected outward.

This explanation corresponds very well to the god’s martial character, even though the graphic history of planetary symbols cannot be reduced to a literal illustration of their attributes.

The form has a clear direction: it starts from the circle and extends outward. This dynamic also explains how easily modern interpretations associate it with initiative and projection.

How does the god of war shape the planet?

Ares among the Greeks and Mars among the Romans embody war, combat, and armed force. Ancient astrology transfers these qualities to the red planet.

The Oxford Research Encyclopedia gives Mars as an obvious example of the transition from myth to astrology: the planet associated with Ares signifies war and conflict.

Mars’s visible red color reinforces this martial association. Long before modern astronomy, its appearance in the sky may have supported imagery of blood, heat, and violence.

What does Mars represent in a traditional chart?

Mars is classified among the malefics in traditional astrology, not because it would be “bad” in every circumstance, but because it cuts, heats, wounds, and separates.

It rules Aries and, in the traditional system, Scorpio. Its functions encompass war, surgery, cutting tools, competition, courage, anger, physical activity, and desire.

A sound reading therefore does not reduce Mars to mere “aggressiveness.” The same force can destroy, defend, cut, conquer, or provide the energy necessary for a difficult action.

Why is Mars associated with iron?

Iron is Mars’s traditional metal. Weapons, blades, tools, and armor provide an obvious material link to the warrior god.

Unicode specifies that ♂ also serves as the alchemical symbol for iron. Alchemical and astrological language therefore use the same character.

The contrast with Venus is classic: copper and iron, harmony and conflict, attraction and separation. This opposition structures many astrological and alchemical texts.

How does the glyph become a sex sign?

♂ is now used as the sign for the male sex in science and signage. Unicode calls it MALE SIGN while also recalling its equivalence with Mars.

As with Venus ♀, biological usage derives from an older planetary glyph. The pair left astrological manuscripts to become an international convention.

This evolution shows how a symbol can change context without completely losing its origin. The modern male arrow remains graphically the same sign as Mars’s, even when the planet is no longer mentioned.

Historical sources and reference points

The NASA describes ♂ as Mars’s shield and spear. Unicode documents its uses for Mars, the masculine, and iron. For the ancient association of Ares/Mars with war in astrology, see the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Planetary Science.
