What does the Jerusalem Cross mean?

3 min read

The Jerusalem cross consists of a large potent cross surrounded by four small crosses. It is closely linked to the Christian memory of Jerusalem and the Latin states founded after the First Crusade. Its form has received several interpretations: Christ and the four Gospels, the five wounds of Christ, or Jerusalem at the center of the four directions. These interpretations should not be confused with a certain, documented origin for each graphic element.

Form Central potent cross with four small crosses
Context Jerusalem and the Latin states of the East
Common interpretation Christ and the four Gospels or the five wounds
Current order Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem
Common color Red on a white background in current heraldry

How can the Jerusalem cross be recognized?

The large central cross has bar-shaped ends, known as potent ends. Four small crosses occupy the quarters around it.

This composition creates five visible crosses while maintaining a perfectly centered arrangement.

It should not be confused with the Maltese cross, which has eight points and no secondary small crosses.

What is its connection to the Latin Kingdom?

The form is associated with the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and the heraldry of the Crusader states. Medieval versions are not always identical to the modern form.

The symbol gradually became an emblem of the holy city and of Christian pilgrimage.

Its history must therefore be placed in the context of the Crusades, the Latin kingdoms, and the religious institutions associated with the holy sites.

What do the small crosses mean?

A very widespread interpretation sees the five crosses as the five wounds of Christ: hands, feet, and side.

Another interpretation identifies the large cross with Christ and the four small ones with the four Gospels or their spread toward the four cardinal directions.

These explanations belong to the symbolic tradition of the motif. They give meaning to the composition without constituting absolute proof of the original design of the coat of arms.

Why does the Order use it today?

The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem uses a red Jerusalem Cross as its distinctive emblem.

The Grand Magisterium presents this cross as a sign linked to the Holy Land and the mission of the Order.

The form therefore remains alive within a contemporary Catholic institution and is not solely a matter of medieval heraldry.

How can overly rigid interpretations be avoided?

Heraldic symbols accumulate interpretations over time. A theological interpretation can become traditional without having been formulated at the exact time the form first appeared.

The Jerusalem Cross perfectly illustrates this phenomenon. Its institutional history is well established; detailed explanations of each small cross belong to several traditions of interpretation.

A reliable information sheet therefore presents the interpretations as such and maintains the distinction between historical attestation and devotional interpretation.

Historical sources and reference points

The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem presents the red cross as its distinctive emblem and explains its spiritual significance. The Grand Magisterium also explains the composition in connection with Jerusalem and the four directions.
