How do you light a charcoal disc?

Hold the charcoal with suitable tongs, then briefly expose one edge to a flame. The charcoal will usually begin to crackle and produce small sparks that spread across its surface. Then place it in a heat-resistant incense burner and wait until it is glowing brightly and covered with a thin grayish layer before adding the incense.

How long should you wait before placing the incense?

Generally wait a few minutes after lighting, allowing the heat to spread properly through the charcoal. Placing resin on charcoal that is not yet hot enough may produce more acrid smoke and uneven burning.

How much incense should be placed on the charcoal?

Always start with a few grains of resin or a small pinch of powder. A large amount does not increase the ritual’s effectiveness and is more likely to smother the charcoal or produce excessive smoke. Gradually add more material once the previous amount has been consumed.

Can all resins be burned directly on charcoal?
