Its name comes from the ancient Greek ἀ- (privative) + μεθύσκω / μεθώ ("to intoxicate / to get drunk"), forming amethystos: literally "not drunk," "one who does not get intoxicated." Among the ancient Greeks (and later the Romans), it was said that amethyst granted sobriety to the wearer. Wine cups carved from amethyst were used to drink without risking intoxication.
