A well-maintained athame will retain its appearance and quality for a long time. A few simple steps can prevent corrosion and preserve the materials it is made of.
After each use or handling, wipe the blade with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel blades are particularly sensitive to moisture and can rust if not protected. Regularly apply a thin layer of neutral mineral oil to the blade, especially if the athame is stored for a long period or used in a humid environment. A very small amount is enough to form a protective film.
Store your athame in a dry place, away from moisture and significant temperature fluctuations. If the sheath is leather, it is best not to leave the blade inside permanently, as leather can retain moisture and promote corrosion over time. Finally, avoid abrasive products or harsh solvents that could damage the blade’s polish, engravings, or decorative elements on the handle. Regular maintenance will preserve both its aesthetics and longevity.
