The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, also known by its English name The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, is probably one of the most well-known magical groups of the 20th century. It deeply influenced occultism, especially in Anglo-Saxon countries, and largely contributed to the revival of ritual magic in modern practices. The order was founded in 1888 by three Freemasons: Westcott, Mathers, and Woodman, based on coded Rosicrucian manuscripts.

Among its members were prominent figures of the Victorian era such as the poet Yeats, Moïna Bergson, the actress Florence Farr, writers specializing in the fantastic like Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, or Charles Williams, as well as Egyptologists like Blackden or Sir Wallis Budge. Several essential names in occultism were also trained there, including Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, Dion Fortune, and Paul Foster Case.

In this work, Denis Labouré begins by explaining the basics of the Qabale taught in the Golden Dawn, an essential knowledge for progressing in practice. He then offers a clear and safe approach to occultism: how applied Qabale works, how to draw a Tree of Life, what the Sephiroth are, and how to activate energy centers within oneself through concrete exercises. The book also describes in detail a central ritual of the order, that of the Middle Pillar, and shows how to effectively use Divine Names during a ritual.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, or The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, remains one of the most well-known and influential magical groups of the 20th century. Founded in 1888, in the heart of the Victorian era, this order marked a decisive turning point in the history of Western occultism. It revived ritual magic, making it structured, codified, and accessible to those who wished to study it seriously. At the origin of this project, three Freemasons – William Wynn Westcott, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and William Robert Woodman – relied on mysterious Rosicrucian manuscripts, written in symbolic language, to build a solid initiatory school, blending ancient traditions and well-defined rituals.

The order attracted many intellectuals, artists, and truth seekers. It included major figures of culture and esotericism, such as the poet and future Nobel laureate William Butler Yeats, Moïna Bergson (sister of philosopher Henri Bergson), actress Florence Farr, as well as writers specializing in the fantastic and the strange, such as Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, and Charles Williams. Renowned Egyptologists like Frederick Leigh Gardner, Thomas Henry Burgoyne, and Sir Wallis Budge also participated, fascinated by the links between ancient magic and modern rituals. It is also within the ranks of the Golden Dawn that several great names of 20th-century occultism were formed, such as Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Paul Foster Case, and Israel Regardie.

In the book dedicated to this order, Denis Labouré offers a clear, educational, and structured introduction to the complex universe of the Golden Dawn. He begins by laying the foundations of the Qabalah as it was taught there, an essential step to understand the workings of the rituals and the symbolism used. He then details the fundamental tools of this tradition: how to construct a Tree of Life, how to interpret the Sephiroth, and above all, how to awaken within oneself the energy centers linked to this system. The author also offers a practical guide to the Middle Pillar ritual, a cornerstone of the Golden Dawn, and provides precise keys to use the Divine Names with accuracy and effectiveness during rituals. The whole forms a complete manual, accessible to motivated beginners as well as more advanced practitioners.

Denis Labouré, born on October 24, 1956, in Paris, is a French author specializing in traditional astrology and Christian spirituality. For over 30 years, he has published about fifteen works that make up a significant part of the French-language literature on traditional astrology and its spiritual dimension. His writings have made many classical texts accessible to French-speaking astrologers, thus transforming their practice.

Here, we don’t judge.

We believe in all forms of magic.

High magic and its rigorous rituals deserve as much respect as spells passed down in the countryside. We read grimoires, respect rites, listen to old stories. Everything practiced with faith deserves serious and curious attention.

We welcome all traditions.

We don’t put one path above another. We talk hoodoo, kabbalah, Christian prayers, elemental magic, folk rituals, Celtic symbols. What matters is respect. Not the label.
