The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a deep devotion in the Catholic tradition, symbolizing purity, suffering, and the maternal love of the Virgin Mary. This devotion focuses on Mary's heart as the reflection of her inner life, her virtues, her unconditional love for God and humanity, as well as her suffering shared with her son Jesus.
The iconography of the Immaculate Heart often shows Mary's heart surrounded by flames, representing her burning and purifying love, and crowned with roses, a symbol of beauty and pain (the thorns). The heart is also pierced by a sword, as prophesied by Simeon in the Gospel of Luke, indicating the sorrows Mary would endure because of the passion and death of Jesus.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was popularized by the apparitions of the Virgin at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, where she reportedly revealed to three children that devotion to her Immaculate Heart would bring peace to the world and the end of the war. Mary asked for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and for reparative communion on the first Saturdays of the month.
The Immaculate Heart is often associated with promises of divine protection, special graces, and guidance toward eternal salvation. The faithful practice this devotion by attending Mass, reciting the rosary, and offering acts of reparation and consecration to Mary's heart. This devotion is celebrated on the Saturday following the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, thus strengthening the bonds between mother and son in Christian spirituality.
