Understanding runes requires experience and trusting your intuition. To help you, here are some tips:

  • Familiarize yourself with the runes: start by learning the meaning of each rune. There are 24 runes in the Elder Futhark runic alphabet, each with its own symbolism and history.

  • Cleaning and consecration: before first use, it is important to cleanse the runes of any previous energies. This can be done by smudging, rinsing them under running water, or exposing them to moonlight. Consecrating the runes involves charging them with your personal energy and intention.

  • Create a calm space: choose a quiet and comfortable place for your readings. You can create an atmosphere conducive to concentration and reflection with soft music, candles, or by burning incense.

  • Ask a specific question or meditate on a theme: before drawing a rune, focus on a specific question or a theme you want to explore. Keep this intention clear in your mind.

  • Draw the runes: shuffle the runes in their pouch, then draw one (or several, depending on the reading method you use). You can either pick randomly from the pouch or spread all the runes in front of you and choose intuitively.

  • Interpretation: each rune drawn will give you insight or an answer related to your question or theme. Reflect on the meaning of the rune and how it applies to your situation. Remember that interpretation depends on your intuition.

  • Meditation and reflection: after the reading, take a moment to meditate on the information received. Think about how you can apply it in your life.

  • Store and give thanks: once the session is over, thank the runes for their guidance and store them in a safe place.

A brief history of the Futhark alphabet

The Futhark alphabet, also known as the Futhark runes, is an ancient alphabetic writing system used by Germanic and Nordic peoples. Its name is derived from the first six letters of this alphabet: F, U, Th, A, R, and K. There are several variants of the Futhark alphabet, but the two main ones are:

  • The Elder Futhark: used from the 2nd century AD, it consists of 24 runes. Each rune had symbolic meaning and was used for divination and inscriptions. This writing system was commonly used during the Germanic migrations period.

  • The Younger Futhark: developed later, around the 8th century, it includes between 16 and 18 runes. This simplified version was adapted to linguistic changes in the Nordic languages of the time.

The Futhark runes were carved on various materials, such as stone, wood, metal, and bone. They were used for various purposes, ranging from commemorative inscriptions and territorial markers to magical or ritual use.

Here is the meaning of each of the 24 runes. Note that the 25th, called Wyrd or the rune of fate, is not engraved because it must be associated with another rune to be understood.

An ancient language.

Viking runes are an ancient writing system used by Nordic and Germanic peoples, mainly between the 2nd and 11th centuries. More than just an alphabet (the futhark), they were also a sacred tool used in divinatory and magical practices. Each rune has a name, a symbolic meaning, and a specific energy connected to nature, forces, or Nordic gods.

These symbols were carved onto objects, stones, or wood to invoke protection, blessings, or answers to spiritual questions.
