🛡️ Protection

Among witch plants, Belladonna ranks high as it represents an entire chapter of history on its own. Atropa Belladonna is named after Atropos, one of the three Fates who cuts the thread of destiny. A fitting name since its berries are toxic. However, it was very popular in Italy where the juice of the berries was consumed by women to dilate the pupil (seen as a seductive advantage, which earned it the name Belladonna), but beware: if they were not poisoned before, a strong dose would send them into a furious rage, sometimes killing their lovers!

A main ingredient in ointments, it was applied to the skin before sabbats and magical workings to release its violent psychoactive effects. This is what gave it the reputation of enabling witches to fly. Circe herself held this plant in high regard for its powerful properties.

But with the rise of monotheistic religions, the use of Belladonna became a symbol of "dangerous witches," justifying their grim persecution.

This root is therefore a powerful talisman of power for all rituals, especially those related to seduction and protection. It can be added to a magic sachet or a spelljar (making sure they are perfectly sealed).

These Belladonna roots in pieces are sold in 25g packages.

Note: this root is just as toxic as its berries. It must never be ingested and should only be handled with gloves. Please consult the safety sheet published by ANSES here.

A plant associated with death and destiny

Belladonna, also called Atropa Belladonna, takes its name from Atropos, one of the Moirai in Greek mythology, the one who cuts the thread of life. This name highlights the nature of this plant, whose berries contain a poison capable of killing quickly. Its fearsome reputation was built around this association between deadly beauty and the power to cut destiny.

      From seduction to extreme behaviors

In Italy, Belladonna juice was used to dilate the pupils, which was seen as a sign of beauty. This practice gave rise to the nickname "Bella Donna," meaning "beautiful lady." However, the plant's side effects caused deviant behaviors: hallucinations, violent outbursts, and loss of control. Some women, under its influence, became aggressive to the point of committing irreparable acts.

The ointment of the sabbaths and the legend of the broomstick

Belladonna was part of the ointments used by witches before rituals. Applied to the skin, these ointments triggered intense visions and altered sensory perception. This alteration gave the sensation of flying or leaving the body, which fueled the imagination around witches flying on their broomsticks. In ancient tradition, figures like Circe already exploited this plant for its powers of transformation.

A plant cursed by the Church

With the rise of monotheistic religions, Belladonna became the embodiment of forbidden practices. Its use was associated with sabbaths, pacts, and rituals deemed demonic. It served as evidence in witch trials and as justification for the persecution of women who possessed herbal knowledge.

A magical ingredient to handle with care

Today, Belladonna root retains its place in traditional magical practices. It is used in rituals focused on seduction, influence, or protection. Its power is feared, and it must be handled carefully. In spell jars or magical sachets, it is always sealed tightly. Its presence evokes an ancient power, both alluring and dangerous.
