The Rue goes by many names, reflecting its magical uses: nightmare herb, herb of grace, herb of the beautiful girl, fetid rue, and many others. Since Antiquity, Rue has been known for its protective, purifying, and apotropaic virtues, meaning its ability to ward off evil and negative influences.
Attributed to witches, Rue was used as a shield against them. In France, cart drivers, responsible for leading donkey-drawn carts, used to keep a sprig of rue in their pocket to protect themselves from witches, who, with a mere evil glance, could have stopped their cart dead in its tracks.
