Our Lady of Fátima

Our Lady of Fátima

Our Lady of Fátima is the title given to the Virgin Mary in reference to the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three young shepherds in Fátima, a village in central Portugal.

The Apparitions of 1917

Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto claimed to have witnessed six apparitions of a "lady brighter than the sun" in the Cova da Iria, near Fátima. The lady reportedly conveyed messages calling for prayer, penance, and conversion, and revealed three secrets concerning the future of the world.

The Miracle of the Sun

On October 13, 1917, a crowd estimated between 30,000 and 100,000 people gathered in Fátima, drawn by the promise of a miraculous sign. That day, many witnesses reported seeing the "Miracle of the Sun," where the sun appeared to dance in the sky, change colors, and rush toward the earth before returning to its normal position. This event strengthened the credibility of the apparitions among the public and the Church.

Recognition and Sanctuary

After thorough investigations, the Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions of Fátima as "worthy of belief" on October 13, 1930. A sanctuary was built on the site of the apparitions, including the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, which attracts millions of pilgrims each year.

The Messages of Fátima

The messages attributed to Our Lady of Fátima emphasize the prayer of the Rosary, the conversion of sinners, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The three secrets revealed to the children concerned a vision of hell, the prediction of a future world war and persecutions against the Church, as well as a vision interpreted as the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981.

Celebrations and Global Influence

The feast of Our Lady of Fátima is celebrated on May 13, commemorating the first apparition. The Fátima sanctuary has become one of the main Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, symbolizing a universal call for peace and prayer.
