General Presentation of Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone in 1181 or 1182 in Assisi, was a mystic and founder of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). He is known for his radical love of poverty, his closeness to the poorest, and his wonder at nature, which he saw as a direct expression of divine love. His message advocating simplicity, brotherhood, and peace had a profound influence on the Catholic Church and the Christian world. He was the first saint to receive the stigmata of Christ in 1224 and composed the famous Canticle of the Creatures, praising God for all creations. He died on October 3, 1226, in Assisi and was canonized in 1228.

Symbols and Appearances of Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis is often depicted in a brown monk’s habit, sometimes bearing the stigmata of Christ. Another common symbol is the presence of birds or animals around him, recalling his love for all creation and his famous sermon to the birds. He is also associated with the crucifix and the Tau, a simple cross he used as a symbol of his faith. His representations reflect his commitment to poverty, peace, and brotherhood​.

The life of Francis is surrounded by many legendary stories, such as the encounter with the wolf of Gubbio, which he supposedly tamed to restore peace in a village. Another famous story is his meeting with the Sultan of Egypt, Al-Kamil, during the Fifth Crusade, where he tried to preach peace instead of participating in the fighting. These stories highlight his relentless quest for peace and interreligious dialogue. Saint Francis is also credited with popularizing the living nativity scene, which allows the celebration of the Nativity in a more tangible and realistic way​.
