Attributions

Amitabha, also known as Amitāyus or Amida, is a revered figure in Pure Land Buddhism. He is considered the Buddha of the Western world, the guide of beings to the Pure Land realm, a paradise where they can achieve enlightenment without obstacles.

Symbols and Appearances

Amitabha is often depicted sitting in meditation in a lotus pose, with a peaceful and benevolent expression on his face. He is sometimes shown wearing a monastic robe and holding a vase filled with the nectar of immortality, symbolizing his ability to grant eternal life to those who turn to him. The main color associated with Amitabha is red, representing universal love and compassion.

Myths

According to the Pure Land Buddhist tradition, Amitabha accumulated great merit and made the vow to establish a realm where beings can achieve enlightenment simply by reciting his name with faith and devotion. In this realm, called the Pure Land (Sukhavati), conditions are ideal for spiritual practice, and beings reborn there can quickly progress toward enlightenment.

Spiritual Message

Amitabha's spiritual message emphasizes grace and universal compassion. He teaches that all beings, regardless of their current condition, have the possibility to reach enlightenment by surrendering to his benevolence and turning to him with sincere faith. Amitabha inspires cultivating love and compassion toward all beings and aspiring to the realization of enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.
